In Time Hits Theaters This Week

And now for a little sci-fi movie news to interrupt your TV-watching week! Someone pointed me to the trailer for In Time, a new genre film that opens this week (October 28). Check it out after the jump.

The movie stars up-and-comers Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried, along with the likes of Cillian Murphy (Batman Begins, Sunshine) and Olivia Wilde (TRON Legacy, Cowboys and Aliens).

The basic story is that, in the near future, medical science becomes so good that human life — and youth — can be extended indefinitely. That costs money, of course, so it ends up further dividing the wealthy and everyone else (in a twist that is relevant for today, for sure). Every human life gets a clock, and when your time is up, you are done on this earth. But if you can afford it, you can “top up” and buy more time.

Time itself — the length of a human life — has become a commodity.

Timberlake’s character ends up gaining access to some of that extra time that he shouldn’t have, and starts giving it away — completely upsetting the balance of society and the power of the wealthy establishment. It’s a near-future, semi-dystopian society with a hero fighting against the system, a bit like films like Gattaca or The Island in that respect.

There are some common themes, but a really intriguing premise here. I want to see this one.
