Syfy Drops Time-Travel Show Rewind

The network has passed on the new TV series … and already aired the pilot.

Syfy Channel won’t send its time-travel pilot Rewind to series, the network officially confirmed today via Twitter.

It’s no surprise, seeing as the pilot shot in the spring of 2012 and the network has been conspicuously silent on the project since its completion. What is surprising is that Syfy has already burned off the pilot as a 2-hour movie. It aired Monday, August 26, with little fanfare and next to no advertising. (I, for one, was looking forward to seeing the show and had no idea it was going to be on.)

Rewind stars Shane McRae as an ex-Special Forces operative who joins a secret government division that uses experimental time travel technology to attempt to undo major world catastrophes — an idea not far off from Seven Days, which ran for three seasons on UPN (1998-2001).

The pilot burn-off is becoming common practice for Syfy, which has done the same with the pilot for Three Inches and Battlestar Galactica‘s spin-off Blood & Chrome.

In fact, Syfy doesn’t have all that great a track record with the pilot process itself. Most of the cable channel’s successful original scripted series started with a script and a full season order, including the forthcoming Helix, Defiance, and all three Stargate series.

Two other scripted series are currently at the pilot production stage for Syfy: Dominion, based on the angel warrior movie Legion; and High Moon, based on the 1969 John Christopher novel The Lotus Caves.

Actually, Stargate SG-1 came to Scifi(later known as Syfy) after 5 season on Showtime so SG-1 was already a somewhat established show before coming to Scifi for season 6.

Syfy would be smart to bring back Stargate in some form as it was a great show for Syfy to lean on for so many years and the fact that Syfy is grasping around for new shows to fill the void is obvious that they are struggling.

It has been way too long since anything Stargate related has been produced

      agree

    • Syfy doesn’t own the rights to the Stargate franchise, any and all decisions related to Stargate are done by MGM, MGM are the only ones that can revive Stargate.

    • stargatefan

Well, Scifi could get in talks with MGM to bring back Stargate since Scifi is the only reason Stargate went off the air anyways since they cancelled universe.

    • All the props and everything have been sold off, the space at Bridge Studios, now taken mostly by Once Upon a Time is not available. What do you want to happen? Syfy can’t revive Stargate even if they wanted too, they have no say on what happens to the franchise. Syfy aren’t to blame for Stargates death, they are to blame for SGUs cancelation but nothing more.

With all due respect nothing will happen with regards to Stargate until MGM makes a move. You won’t see any networks saying anything because no one but MGM knows anything. The former producers know nothing about the fate of the franchise, they’re just as in the dark as the fans. MGM holds all the cards.

Just Watched the pilot,Show was great. Can’t believe SYFY canceled this!

    • It wasn’t cancelled. The network just passed on it, for reasons unknown, maybe they didn’t like what they saw, maybe they couldn’t make it work within the budget they had. Networks pass on produced pilots all the time.

  • This pilot was the best thing ive seen from Syfy in years! I always have low expectations when it comes from syfy (after SGU), but this was actually quite good and well worth watching.
    And ofcourse..they cancel it.
It musy have been too expeinvie for them. This didnt look like the normal syfy crap.

Really enjoyed Rewind…still quite disappointed that Alphas is gone, along with quite a few other good shows over the years. Used to watch Syfy all the time. Won’t be watching this network anymore. They continue to leave me unhappy that they can launch good stuff then just cancel it. Tired of wasting my time with Syfy. No more.

  • I just happened to have watched Rewind, very well done and the ending left you wanting more. Much to my disappointment this show is not being brought as a series, very unfortunate, SyFy what the h are you thinking??? there are so few good scripted shows out there and this one had a very good chance of making it provided you properly advertise etc…shame on you 🙁

  • It reminded me of an extension of Fringe. I thought it might lead to something really good. Sad to see their decision to not continue.

the premise was like Sliders…except instead of traveling into different dimensions, the characters travel back in time. These characters were kinda lame and uninspiring.

Aww this makes me so upset just when something comes on I get into they decide to drop it. I love that show under the dome and insted of watching that on Monday I watched rewind cuz it sparked my interest and here it is the following Monday and im looking for it to put a reminder on and can’t even find it man this sucks I want more. It was a good plot asking for more and questions on what’s next.

This is why people are dropping their service. Reality TV like Ghost hunters and other crap shows have become their choice. So I think they should drop the name SYFY and use a more appropriate name.
    Like notsosyfy!!!!

why even air a two hour pilot that you would be sending to series? the only thing that you managed to do is piss off syfy fans unless that’s what you wanted to do. this channel has made me so mad in the past be taking off all the good stuff and leaving sh** on like ghost hunters and crap like that i’ll tell you one more thing you take any more of the stuff I do watch and i’m done with syfy.

Loved the show. If they weren’t making it a series why did they leave the cliffhanger? They easily could have ended before the cliffhanger. Bad move SYFY.

I caught this movie at the tail end. The fact that they did not advertise it explains why I did not know about it. The little bit I saw I was really psyched about, as I thought it looked pretty decent.
