Once Upon A Time In Wonderland

Fantasy Premiere: Once Upon A Time … Now In Wonderland!

The spin-off series starts Thursday night at 8/7c on ABC.

ABC’s family fantasy hit Once Upon A Time is barely a little over two years old, but it’s already welcoming a spin-off series to the airwaves. The bulky-titled yet really quite charming Once Upon A Time In Wonderland makes its series premiere tonight at 8/7c on ABC.

After a quick stop in Storybrooke to make it clear that this show really is taking place in the same fantasy universe (even though that universe actually includes many different parallel “lands”), the story soon shifts to Victorian England. There, in a scary mental institution (in the midst of a scary thunderstorm, no less), Alice is being accused of lying about her many trips to Wonderland and her remarkable adventures there — since she was a little girl.

And young Alice not only found adventure in her trips to Wonderland, but eventually she found her soul mate and fell in love. Then … he died.

Once Upon A Time In Wonderland (Pilot) - White RabbitJust when all hope seems lost, a pair of old friends break in … and break Alice out, with the live-changing news that the love of her life is actually still alive.

Wonderland stars Sophie Lowe as a grown-up, kick-ass Alice; Michael Socha (you recognize him from the BBC’s Being Human) as the Knave of Hearts; Peter Gadiot as the genie Cyrus; Emma Rigby as the deliciously evil Red Queen; and Naveen Andrews (LOST) as the evil genie Jafar.

Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz co-created the new series. They are behind the original Once, of course, and cut their genre teeth as writers on ABC’s LOST.

The show’s first season is meant to tell one complete, self-contained story — probably limited to 13 episodes, though ABC hasn’t ruled out the possibility of adding the “back nine” episodes for the spring. (Alternately, the network could follow FOX’s Sleepy Hollow example and bring the show back next fall for another short run.)
