Syfy’s Krypton Explores Superhero Origins
The potential new series comes from producer David S. Goyer
Syfy Channel is getting into the comic book genre, announcing this week that it is developing a DC Comics series that will chronicle the backstory of Superman’s home planet.
Krypton comes from Man of Steel and The Dark Knight producer David S. Goyer, with Ian Goldberg (Once Upon A Time) penning the teleplay for Syfy and Warner Horizon Television.
Says Syfy:
Years before the Superman legend we know, the House of El was shamed and ostracized. This series follows The Man of Steel’s grandfather as he brings hope and equality to Krypton, turning a planet in disarray into one worthy of giving birth to the greatest Super Hero ever known.
The technologically advanced civilization was depicted rather extensively in the opening minutes of 2013’s Man of Steel, with Russell Crowe portraying Superman’s father Jor-El.
The “before there was a superhero” strategy has worked so far with FOX’s Gotham, which tells the story of the dangerous city decades before Batman emerged.
DC Comics also has Constantine (an adaptation of Hellblazer) up and running at NBC, and Arrow and The Flash at The CW — with iZombie coming at mid-season. TNT is working on a Titans show featuring a post-Batman Dick Grayson leading a team of young superheroes, and CBS is reportedly in the casting phase for a Supergirl pilot.
Meanwhile, Syfy is jumping back into outer space with next week’s miniseries event Ascension (starts Monday, 9/8c).
