FOX Orders Fantasy Adventure Show Hieroglyph

The action-adventure show is set against the backdrop of ancient Egypt.

It was a pitch that narrowly missed a pilot pick-up two years ago. Now Hieroglyph has been given a straight-to-series order at FOX.

With ancient Egypt as its backdrop, the show is described as an action-adventure hour filled with palace intrigue, quests for power, and a world of gods, goddesses, and magic. It is expected to make it to air as part of FOX’s 2014-2015 season.

The network has ordered 13 episodes of the series, with Pacific Rim screenwriter Travis Beacham to write and executive produce, alongside producers Peter Chernin and Katherine Pope (New Girl). Miguel Sapochnik (Fringe) will direct the first episode and also serve as an executive producer.

“Set in ancient Egypt, where fantasy and reality intertwined, HIEROGLYPH follows a notorious thief who is plucked from prison to serve the Pharoah, navigating palace intrigue, seductive concubines, criminal underbellies and even a few divine sorcerers,” FOX said in a press release.

“We wanted to do a show about deceit, sex, intrigue in the court and fantastical goings-on — no better place to set that than ancient Egypt,” FOX Chairman of Entertainment Kevin Reilly said. “Travis Beacham has an inventive mind, and he has wrapped this all together in this intoxicating new drama.”

The show originally came to FOX in early 2012 as a spec script, when it was one of four projects in contention for FOX’s final drama pilot slot for that development season, according to Deadline.

Hieroglyph will be produced by Twentieth Century Fox Television and Chernin Entertainment (which did Rise of Planet of the Apes, and its upcoming sequel), with cameras rolling in early 2014. Watch SciFi Stream for more!
