Batman Prequel TV Series Gotham Coming to FOX
The new series will feature Commissioner Gordon.
FOX is getting into the comic book business.
The network has given a rare straight-to-series order to Gotham, set in the DC universe in the days before Batman came to the troubled city. The show will follow Commissioner Jim Gordon (who was played in the Christopher Nolan films by Gary Oldman).
Of course, if it’s to be an origins story starring a younger Gordon, he won’t be Gotham’s police commissioner just yet. Gordon will be a detective, according to Deadline. And while Batman himself won’t be a part of the series, there is plenty of familiar mythology to explore — from the Wayne family to the origins of the many and colorful members of the rogues gallery.
The character dates back to Detective Comics #27, the same issue that introduced the Dark Knight.
The new series comes from The Mentalist showrunner Bruno Heller and Warner Bros. Television. FOX reportedly won a bidding war for the hot project.
Gotham would join fellow DC adaptation Arrow (The CW) on the airwaves, along with a possible Flash series The CW is considering. (The CW also hasn’t given up on Amazon, an adaptation of Wonder Woman’s story.) And Marvel, of course, has just launched its own Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., over on ABC.
Gotham is likely to make the schedule for the 2014-2015 season. We’ll bring you more news as it breaks!
