Syfy Channel has picked up the U.S. broadcast rights for Sinbad, an adventure series aired by Sky1 in the United Kingdom.

The series stars Elliot Knight as the legendary seafaring adventurer, who after accidentally killing an innocent is cursed to live his life at sea until he atones for his sin. He can only come ashore for 24 hours, and is hunted by Lord Akbari (Naveen Andrews, LOST) — whose son Sinbad accidentally killed in a street fight.

Marama Corlett, Elliot Cowan, Junix Inocian, and Dimitri Leonidas also star.

The 12-episode first season began airing on Sky1 in the U.K. in July, and has its season finale on September 23. It is produced by Impossible Pictures — the company behind Primeval and Walking With Dinosaurs — and is filmed on the island of Malta in the Mediterranean Sea.

Syfy plans to begin the series in April 2013, which is when it will also be premiering its new original series Defiance.
