Arthur Darvill Joins Arrow/Flash Spin-Off

The Doctor Who alum will play a time traveler

Former Doctor Who companion Arthur Darvill is The CW’s newest DC Comics superhero.

The actor is reportedly in final negotiations to join a potential new spin-off show in the network’s DC television universe, following Arrow and this year’s hit newcomer The Flash and including several crossover characters from both.

Darvill will play “the Traveler,” a.k.a. Rip Hunter, a roguish time traveler from the comics who in later years was ret-conned to be established as the son of fellow time traveler Booster Gold. Hunter is the leader of a group of time travelers.

The actor played Rory Williams during Matt Smith’s run as the Doctor on the BBC series.

Also joining the still-unnamed spin-off: Broadway actress Ciara Renee has been cast in the role of Hawkgirl, a.k.a. Kendra Saunders. The character is a young hero who has lived many lives and been reincarnated many times. (Maria Canals-Barrera voiced the “Shayera Hol” version of the character in the animated series Justice League.)

Producers Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim, and Andrew Kreisberg have conceived of the new show as a sort of Magnificent Seven of superheroes.

Cast members previously announced include Brandon Routh (Ray Palmer / The Atom), Caity Lotz (the late Sarah Lance / Canary), Wentworth Miller (Leonard Snart / Captain Cold), Dominic Purcell (Mick Rory / Heatwave), and Victor Garber (Prof. Martin Stein / half of Firestorm). If this list includes the main seven (and if producers really are targeting that magic number) Darvill and Renee would complete the team’s roster — five men and two women.

The show is reportedly being developed outside of the normal pilot process. If it goes to series, it may not appear on screens until mid-season (early 2016). Stay tuned to SciFi Stream for updates.
