Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Opens Season Two With Big Guest Roster

The series returns to ABC on September 23

The future is uncertain for the Agents of (what was once) S.H.I.E.L.D., as the Marvel adventure series heads into its second season this month. But we do know that the show is going big in its premiere episode, with an impressive roster of guest stars.

The season kicks off with “Shadows,” featuring the return of B.J. Britt as Agent Antoine Triplett and Patton Oswalt as Agent Billy Koenig. Also guest starring are Lucy Lawless (Xena, Battlestar Galactica) as Isabel Hartly, a tough veteran S.H.I.E.L.D. agent; Reed Diamond (Dollhouse, Journeyman) as Daniel Whitehall (a Hydra leader in the comics); Henry Simmons as Alphonso “Mack” Mackenzie; Wilmer Calderon as Idaho; Brian Patrick Wade as Carl Creel; Matthew Glave as Roger Browning; Simon Kassianides as Sunil Bakshi, Raquel Gardner as Carla Talbot.

Not enough for you? Hayley Atwell will reprise her Marvel film role as Peggy Carter in the season premiere. That seems a wise way to remind TV viewers about the character, who will get her own 8-episode series starting in January, when Agents go on break.

Finally, political commentator George Stephanopoulos will put in an appearance as himself.

Coulson and his team are now wanted fugitives with limited resources — but that’s not stopping them from keeping the world safe from powerful and unseen threats everywhere. However, with new members they hardly know, will S.H.I.E.L.D. ever be trusted again?

Returning to main cast are Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson, Ming-Na Wen as Melinda May, Iain De Caestecker as Leo Fitz, Elizabeth Henstridge as Jemma Simmons, Chloe Bennet as Skye, and … (still trying to figure this one out after the events of Season One) Brett Dalton as Grant Ward.

London-born Nick Blood (Trollied) also joins the show as Lance Hunter. In Marvel comics lore Hunter is a member of “S.T.R.I.K.E.” (Special Tactical Reserve for International Key Emergencies) — a sort of British version of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premieres Tuesday, September 23 (9/8c) on ABC. Keep up with the show in our series guide!
