MTV Renews The Shannara Chronicles For Season Two

The fantasy series based on Terry Brooks’ novels will return

MTV’s new fantasy hit The Shannara Chronicles will be back for a second season, the cable network announced today.

Based on the series of novels by Terry Brooks, Shannara follows a trio of young heroes on a mission to save their world from the invasion of a demon army. Though set thousands of years in our own future (with ruined cities dotting the transformed landscape), this is a world populated not only by humans but by elves, gnomes, trolls, and magic.

The 10-episode first season averaged a 0.98 Live + 3 rating in MTV’s important demographic of viewers aged 12 to 34, making it the channel’s highest-rated new series this year. Shannara also enjoyed a 106 percent lift in Live + 7 ratings — the highest DVR-delayed viewing number for any freshman series in MTV history.

Al Gough and Miles Millar (Smallville) write and serve as showrunners for The Shannara Chronicles, with Jon Favreau, Jonathan Liebesman, Terry Brooks, and Dan Farah also serving as executive producers. The series stars Austin Butler as the half-human, half-elf Wil Ohmsford; Poppy Drayton as elven princess Amberle Elessedil; Ivana Baquero as the dangerous Rover girl Eretria; and Manu Bennett as the Druid warrior Allanon.

I can’t wait to see what season 2 brings,” MTV Executive Vice President and Head of Scripted Development Mina Lefevre said.

“We’re thrilled to continue the momentum established in Season 1,” said Jenna Glazier, Executive Vice President of television at Sonar Entertainment. “Along with the ongoing support of MTV, the entire creative team is poised to raise the bar even higher in Season 2.”

There’s no specific word yet on when production will resume in New Zealand, or when Season Two will arrive on TV screens. Keep it with SciFi Stream for more details, and catch up on Season One with our Shannara Chronicles show guide.
