Legends of Tomorrow’s First Trailer: Villain Revealed, Canary’s Return, And More!

The CW unveils the first look at its new superhero team

The first look at the new DC Comics superhero show Legends of Tomorrow is finally here, and it’s pretty epic.

The CW released the 4-minute trailer today as part of its upfront presentation to advertisers, along with confirmation that the Arrow/Flash spin-off will debut at midseason (January or February of next year).

For those nervous about potential spoilers for the show’s premiere episode … well, you probably shouldn’t be here right now. But watch the trailer first, and then stay tuned from some analysis below.

Here’s what the trailer looks to reveal:

  • Both Arrow (Stephen Amell) and the Flash (Grant Gustin) will turn up in the pilot, and conduct the same sort of rooftop commissioning that Barry received from Oliver a year ago. The Flash will also fight alongside the new team in what looks to be their first mission.
  • The immortal villain — certain to be the show’s Big Bad for at least the first season, if not longer — is none other than legendary DC Comics antagonist Vandal Savage. In comics lore he has lived for thousands of years after being exposed to a meteorite as a caveman. Now he is bent on conquering the world.
  • Sara Lance (Caity Lotz) looks to be returning to life via Nanda Parbat’s Lazarus Pits, many months after her death at the start of Arrow’s third season. We know that in bringing people back to life the Pits change them, sometimes drastically and not necessary for the better — so Sara may undergo some measure of personality alterations. She’s confirmed here as White Canary, a character who has had an antagonistic role in the Birds of Prey comics.
  • The series will involve time travel, possibly on a regular basis. Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) is a time traveler from the future, and tells the team that “Savage’s evil spans the course of history, so we will have to travel through time to stop him.”
  • Ray Palmer has finally applied his miniaturization technology to his ATOM suit, on display for the first time at the trailer’s end. This will bring his character the rest of the way into its comic book counterpart, so that the Atom can shrink himself down at will.
  • Firestorm will be involved in some way, shape, or form, despite the fact that half of him — actor Robbie Amell (Ronnie Raymond) — isn’t among the show’s regular cast. We’re not sure if that means he will turn up on a recurring basis, or if Martin Stein (series regular Victor Garber) will be able to become Firestorm on his own, or something else entirely.
  • Not unexpectedly, the series will have the same mix of action and humor that has characterized its predecessors, and The Flash in particular. The mix of so many diverse characters, both heroes and villains, seems to provide set-up for a lot of banter.

Legends of Tomorrow premieres in early 2016 on The CW. Stick with SciFi Stream for much more on the show in the months ahead!
