AMC Renews The Walking Dead For Season Six

Renewal comes days before the season premiere

Perhaps intending to make a big news splash to help promote the upcoming fifth season premiere of The Walking Dead, AMC today announced that it has already renewed the show for next season.

Cable’s highest-rated scripted drama is also one of the biggest shows on television overall, with Season Four opening to a monster 16.11 million viewers (Live + Same Day) one year ago.

With numbers like that the renewal is by no means a surprise. The cable network has also committed to a pilot for a potential spin-off, which would follow a different group of survivors elsewhere in the zombie apocalypse world (and allow writers to stray further from the storylines of Robert Kirkman’s venerable graphic novel).

After several years of rotating showrunners, Scott M. Gimple will return for his third year on the job. Also executive producing in Season Six will be Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, David Alpert, Greg Nicotero and Tom Luse.

Season Five of The Walking Dead starts this Sunday, October 12 (9/8c). Live talk show Talking Dead also returns at 10/9c, with host Chris Hardwick. Keep up with the show with SciFi Stream’s Walking Dead show guide!
