Mike Fleming at Deadline Hollywood has an intriguing answer: He's read a 24-page treatment for fifth and sixth movies that would wrap up the story by none other than William Wisher, the screenwriter who contributed to the first two (and best-loved) installments in the franchise, James Cameron's original Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

We won't bore you with the details, but the hedge fund prevailed in an auction of the rights by Halcyon Holding Corp., which had been pushed into bankruptcy by the very fund that ended up winning the rights, according to Deadline Hollywood:

It was dark," Worthington told a group of reporters in London last Friday, agreeing with some of the critical responses to the movie. "There is no humor. That's what we set out to do.
Although Terminator Salvation was initially intended to be the first part of a new Terminator trilogy, its performance at the domestic US box office led many to question whether a fifth Terminator film would happen.

The series was canceled after two seasons of action, complicated mythology, rich characters and plenty of surprises, not the least of which was the series finale in which John (Thomas Dekker) goes into the future, leaving Sarah (Lena Headey) behind in the past. So just how did "Terminator: Salvation" get defeated at the box office by a band of Ben Stiller-led living museum artifacts? Maybe it’s simply that audiences were looking for something the whole family could see. Or perhaps, despite "Salvation’s" PG-13 rating, the Terminator series still carries the stigma of a hard-R series, keeping families away during Memorial Day weekend. Whatever the case may be, the film certainly had a lot going against it. It’s been six long years since "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines," and with its marquee star currently serving as the California governor, "Salvation" was forced to take the franchise ...
