Supernatural season 5 debuted on the CW Network last Thursday to some impressive ratings numbers. The season premiere improved over last year’s season premiere by 6% in women aged 18-34 and the show scored it’s highest ratings with women 18-49 since Jan 2009. Combined with The Vampire Diaries it helped the ...

Supernatural

I’ve had numerous requests to add Supernatural to the line up of shows that I write about and so I’ve decided it’s time.

Unfortunately the first article I’ve got for you is the news that the show’s days are numbered.

Supernatural is about to begin airing its fifth season and it seems creator Eric Kripke intends it to be the last.

“I did set out [to] tell a five-season storyline,” Kripke says. “Quite frankly, I never expected [the ...

'Thursdays go Goth' pairing Supernatural, Vampire The CW's hot new Twilight-tinged series The Vampire Diaries is kicking long time resident Smallville off of Thursdays, while pairing up with Supernatural, the network announced in the upfront presentation of its 2009-'10 schedule on Thursday. Meanwhile, the network canceled Reaper, as expected, though it's unclear if the show will live on in first-run syndication. "Thursdays go Goth" is one of The CW's new taglines. The Smallville/Supernatural pairing on Thursdays has been a staple on The CW for years, with the DC Comic-inspired Smallville doing fairly well and Supernatural building its ratings despite the worst competition on TV (it airs opposite Grey's Anatomy and CSI). Both shows had already gotten pick ups from the network.

“Smallville” is getting a ninth season, but don’t expect “Supernatural” to go that far. Eric Kripke doesn’t care what the ratings are on The CW … after the fifth season, he’s done. “Despite what the network and studio may or may not want, I don’t have more than five seasons of a story,” Kripke told Entertainment Weekly, according to the New York Post. “I would be willing to make sure there are enough villains and heroes around to continue a new story, but there’s no way I’m doing Season 6.” The show is concluding its fourth season, and The CW has already enthusiastically renewed it for a fifth season. But even if Kripke does leave, it doesn’t necessarily mean the end of “Supernatural.” When Al Gough and Miles Millar left “Smallville,” The CW renewed the show anyway, and …

No need to wonder whether “Smallville” will be back for a ninth season. Or if “Supernatural” will have yet another outing. The CW has renewed six shows Tuesday, including both “Smallville” and “Supernatural,” showing the world that despite its sagging ratings, it’s here to stay … at least for now. By all accounts, the current season of “Smallville” was supposed to be its final one. The creators had left before the start of the season, as did the show’s big bad guy, Michael Rosenbaum’s Lex Luthor. But the new creative team provided a spark to the show that no one saw coming, and ratings — while slightly off from last year — are much stronger than expected. In fact, “Smallville” remains one of The CW’s highest-rated shows. Viewing numbers were not a question mark for a return …
