Well, looks like the show itself is rising from the dead. Sort of.

Chi McBride, who played detective Emerson Cod, told us that series creator Bryan Fuller has begun writing the graphic novel follow-up about which we first reported last year, and McBride has actually seen the first few pages.

"Even if I knew that the series was coming to an end when we were doing the last episode, I don't know if I would have been able to end the Chuck and Ned story because, for me, that's the relationship that goes on and that you fight for." But this exercise in dark whimsy about a crime-solving piemaker and his bevy of eccentric friends saw its ratings suffer due to a writers' strike during its first truncated season, and it never quite regained its momentum during the second.

ABC will be airing the final three episodes of Pushing Daisies starting May 30th.
The facts are these: in 2007, ABC unveiled a unique and surprising television series as part of their line-up – "Pushing Daisies." Revolving around the life of Ned the Piemaker (Lee Pace) and his knack for resurrecting the dead, the show received substantial critical acclaim for its smooshing of colorful visuals, wacky concepts and absurd amounts of pie in what can only be described as a work of creative genius. However, as a casualty of the industry-wide strike of the Writers Guild of America, the show came to an abrupt end and after a storming nine episodes promised a strong second season. Alas, through declining ratings and a degree of critical backlash to some creative choices in its second year, the series was axed from schedules and has never been seen again ... until now.

Our friends at SyFyPortal have concluded that NBC's Chuck has grown its overnight audience by more than 10 percent from the beginning of the season, marking the largest positive jump of any genre network show in the most recent 10 active television weeks of the season, compared to the first 10.

According to the site's analysis, the show grew from an average 3.9 rating/6 share overnight audience in the first 10 weeks to a 4.3/7 in its most recent batch of episodes.

Meanwhile, CBS' Eleventh Hour, which is in the middle of its freshman season, has been murdering the competition. Not only does it lead among genre shows, but its 7.7/13 average rating is also actually 3 percent higher than the ratings it earned in the first 10 active weeks of the season. The 9.7/16 it earned for its 11th episode is the highest any genre show has garnered so far this season, and it's tracking more than 18 percent better than its closest competition, Lost, which averaged a 6.5/10 through the beginning of February.

The site added that four genre shows saw double-digit viewership drops, led by ABC's Pushing Daisies (25 percent), ABC's Life on Mars (23 percent), NBC's Knight Rider (19 percent) and NBC's Heroes (11 percent).

This week we continue my look at the genre series that aired on network television this fall. Last time out, we talked about the science-fiction/fantasy genre series that aired on CBS and The CW. This time, let’s take a look at ABC and Fox. ABC "Pushing Daisies" was a series doomed to fail. It was smart, funny and cute as hell. The problem is the audience didn’t return when the series did. "Pushing Daisies" did an apparent reboot this season, starting with a new introduction episode, and it lost some of the bizarre charm it had in its premiere season. While cute, the whimsy that launched the show was gone. "Pushing Daisies" is not a bad show, and I think I’d rather see it go now, then watch it degrade into a mess. It didn’t get a back nine pickup, so the 13 we get this season will probably ...

This review contains MODERATE SPOILERS for “Norwegians,” the tenth episode from the second season of ABC’s “Pushing Daisies.” In contrast to the first season, this year promised to “go further” on all the elements that made Year One a joy unrivaled by any other television production; an arc was introduced, stories become more ambitious and above all, more random. Unfortunately the show has struggled to condense all of this into a single hour and so the result has been many threads left dangling overrun into the following week. This approach does have its advantages for building a continual arc, however all of those elements are quickly set aside in the opening teaser for a new, wackier story to be told and any impact they could have had is totally forgotten. Take for instance the runaway ...

This review contains MODERATE SPOILERS for "The Legend Of Merle McQuoddy," the ninth episode from the second season of ABC’s "Pushing Daisies." "The Legend of Merle McQuoddy" opens with some fantastic tension between Chuck and Ned, however the sting of anxiety is very quickly broken by Ned's acceptance of her gruesome decision mere minutes after the episode begins. Following on from the unusually dark Ned’s announcement of "you don’t want to hear what I have to say," their embrace (heart warming though it may be) brings their apprehension to a swift and conveniently easy end. On the flip side, it allows the episode to jump right into its stand alone randomness involving a light house, the Bat signal and some very suave raincoats. Unfortunately, the death of a lighthouse keeper doesn’t ...

This review contains MODERATE SPOILERS for “Comfort Food,” the eighth episode from the second season of ABC’s “Pushing Daisies.” Originally, the notion of a “Pushing Daisies/Wonderfalls” crossover is nothing less than a cause for celebration; two of television's greatest and most unique blend of drama and comedy coming together for a single adventure. Then the logistics of it begins to sink in. Both shows starred Lee Pace in very different characters and so any substantial crossover could never come to pass. But for fans of both shows though, the return of Beth Grant (more commonly known as Gracie Lee on “Jericho”) as the Muffin Buffalo works as a very subtle overlap of the two shows without compromising either series. Instead, she becomes one of many bizarre and outlandish characters like ...

It's not exactly a surprise, but ABC has finally cancelled Pushing Daisies after a disastrous second season. The network has decided not to order any more episodes of Pushing Daisies along with Eli Stone and Dirty Sexy Money, according to Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello. All three shows were in their second season, and all three shows were suffering tremendously in the ratings. It's all true, creator Bryan Fuller told Ausiello. I'm so very proud of this show and grateful for everyone's hard work in bringing it to life. Pushing Daisies has averaged a 3.8 rating/6 share in overnights through six episodes, including a series low 3.1/5 Wednesday night, finishing behind even reality programming on The CW. Last season, Pushing Daisies was the third highest-rated ...

In a review of Fast National ratings from Nielsen Media Research by SyFy Portal, over the first 10 active weeks of the 2008-09 television season, "Supernatural" has earned a 2.2 rating/3 share on average. That's up nearly 16 percent from the 1.9/3 average "Supernatural" earned during the first 10 active weeks of the 2007-08 season. Four other shows weren't so lucky, however. ABC's "Pushing Daisies," NBC's "Heroes" and "Chuck," and The CW's "Smallville," all have smaller average overnight audiences from the previous year, and nearly all of them are being beat by new genre shows.
The executive producer and creator of ABC’s whimsical drama “Pushing Daisies” is starting to get nervous. Reasonably so – rumors of cancellation are plaguing his show. "Every day we’re hearing that we’re canceled and then we hear that we’re not," Fuller told the Los Angeles Times. "It’s all rumors. Nothing official at all. We’re in radio-silence land." Despite the rumors spirits have remained strong on the set, Fuller said. "It's infectious, and we're hoping ABC gets infected by that dedication," he said. Despite taking home three of its 15 Emmy nominations, the show's second season ratings have been down. The writer’s strike has been blamed by some for "Pushing Daisies’" tough first season – only nine of the scripted 22 episodes of the show were ever filmed. This season, ABC isn’t ...

Get ready to scratch the first genre series off the network program list. Rumors are swirling everywhere that ABC is canceling "Pushing Daisies" after its sophomore season imploded, and viewers who supported it during last year's strike-shortened season, failed to return. ABC has denied it's made any decision on the fate of the show, but TV Week says it's almost certain that production will not resume on the Bryan Fuller series. "Pushing Daisies" didn't air Wednesday night because of the Country Music Association awards show, but the show has managed only a 4.0 rating/6 share in overnights from Nielsen Media Research after five episodes. That's down 36.5 percent from its 6.3/10 average last year that made it the genre's third-most watched network program behind "Lost" and "Heroes." ...
