‘Pushing Daisies’ Returns In May
The facts are these: in 2007, ABC unveiled a unique and surprising television series as part of their line-up “Pushing Daisies.” Revolving around the life of Ned the Piemaker (Lee Pace) and his knack for resurrecting the dead, the show received substantial critical acclaim for its smooshing of colorful visuals, wacky concepts and absurd amounts of pie in what can only be described as a work of creative genius. However, as a casualty of the industry-wide strike of the Writers Guild of America, the show came to an abrupt end and after a storming nine episodes promised a strong second season. Alas, through declining ratings and a degree of critical backlash to some creative choices in its second year, the series was axed from schedules and has never been seen again … until now. TV Guide …
Chuck’s audience grew most; Daisies’ lost most
SFOTV: Narrowing Down The Choices, Part 2
This week we continue my look at the genre series that aired on network television this fall. Last time out, we talked about the science-fiction/fantasy genre series that aired on CBS and The CW. This time, let’s take a look at ABC and Fox. ABC “Pushing Daisies” was a series doomed to fail. It was smart, funny and cute as hell. The problem is the audience didn’t return when the series did. “Pushing Daisies” did an apparent reboot this season, starting with a new introduction episode, and it lost some of the bizarre charm it had in its premiere season. While cute, the whimsy that launched the show was gone. “Pushing Daisies” is not a bad show, and I think I’d rather see it go now, then watch it degrade into a mess. It didn’t get a back nine pickup, so the 13 we get this season will probably …
Review: ‘Pushing Daisies’ – Norwegians
This review contains MODERATE SPOILERS for “Norwegians,” the tenth episode from the second season of ABC’s Pushing Daisies. In contrast to the first season, this year promised to “go further” on all the elements that made Year One a joy unrivaled by any other television production; an arc was introduced, stories become more ambitious and above all, more random. Unfortunately the show has struggled to condense all of this into a single hour and so the result has been many threads left dangling overrun into the following week. This approach does have its advantages for building a continual arc, however all of those elements are quickly set aside in the opening teaser for a new, wackier story to be told and any impact they could have had is totally forgotten. Take for instance the runaway …
Review: ‘Pushing Daisies’ – The Legend Of Merle McQuoddy
This review contains MODERATE SPOILERS for “The Legend Of Merle McQuoddy,” the ninth episode from the second season of ABC’s “Pushing Daisies.” “The Legend of Merle McQuoddy” opens with some fantastic tension between Chuck and Ned, however the sting of anxiety is very quickly broken by Ned’s acceptance of her gruesome decision mere minutes after the episode begins. Following on from the unusually dark Ned’s announcement of “you don’t want to hear what I have to say,” their embrace (heart warming though it may be) brings their apprehension to a swift and conveniently easy end. On the flip side, it allows the episode to jump right into its stand alone randomness involving a light house, the Bat signal and some very suave raincoats. Unfortunately, the death of a lighthouse keeper doesn’t …
Review: ‘Pushing Daisies’ – Comfort Food
This review contains MODERATE SPOILERS for “Comfort Food,” the eighth episode from the second season of ABC’s Pushing Daisies. Originally, the notion of a Pushing Daisies/Wonderfalls crossover is nothing less than a cause for celebration; two of television’s greatest and most unique blend of drama and comedy coming together for a single adventure. Then the logistics of it begins to sink in. Both shows starred Lee Pace in very different characters and so any substantial crossover could never come to pass. But for fans of both shows though, the return of Beth Grant (more commonly known as Gracie Lee on Jericho) as the Muffin Buffalo works as a very subtle overlap of the two shows without compromising either series. Instead, she becomes one of many bizarre and outlandish characters like …
Review: ‘Pushing Daisies’ – Robbing Hood
This review contains MODERATE SPOILERS for “Robbing Hood,” the seventh episode from the second season of ABC’s Pushing Daisies. The stories this season have helped provide a greater understanding of each individual character on the series, and while there have been a few gems among these (like Olive’s time at the nunnery in “Bad Habits”), they don’t quite have the same dazzle as the slightly shortened first season. “Robbing Hood” is the same, and is at points heavily bogged down by the unnecessarily arced story of Dwight Dixon (Stephen Root) who seems to be infiltrating all angles of the show. The genuine charm of the first season that each episode was intensely standalone with a bizarre mystery to unfold. Although this season, the same tends to hold true most of the time, there are some …
