Sci-Fi On TV: Why Do They Bother?

Now that the networks have announced their new series for the fall season, I want to take a moment to talk about one of them, “Human Target.” The series, created in 1972 for DC Comics, was centered on Christopher Chance, a detective/bodyguard who specialized in impersonating an individual threatened with death. Chance would take the place of the target while trying to capture the villain. Chance wasn’t a superhero. He only used makeup to disguise himself as the target. The Human Target was a backup feature for most of its run, but did get its own series under the Vertigo imprint for DC Comics. In that series, the character was disfigured and took the identity of a client. Chance had to deal with his own loss of identity as well as multiple personality issues that he began to exhibit. Up is tops, with $68.2m; Trek still strong; Hell has modest debut

Disney/Pixar’s Up took the top slot at the May 29 weekend box office with an estimated $68.2 million opening, maintaining a perfect box-office track record for Pixar Animation, whose 10 films all have been commercial and critical hits, the Associated Press reported.

Up had the third-best opening for a film from Disney-owned Pixar, just behind the $70 million debuts for Finding Nemo and The Incredibles. Last summer’s Disney-Pixar release, WALL-E, debuted with $63.1 million.

Ryan Reynolds, who played Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, told reporters Sunday that a spinoff movie is in the works, that he’s actively involved and that he’s eager to match up with other Marvel heroes.

“Look, I’m into any role in which I get to kick Captain America in the nuts,” Reynolds said in a press conference in Beverly Hills, Calif., where he was promoting the romantic comedy The Proposal.

‘Star Trek’ Reaches $200M, Finishes In Fifth

Pixar, as expected, dominated the box office, but “Star Trek” put in yet another solid week. “Up” earned $68.2 million in its first week to take the top spot, but the Ben Stiller comedy “Night at the Museum 2″ kept pace with a $25.5 million weekend. “Star Trek” finished fifth with a $12.8 million weekend, which brings its total box office for the year to $209 million, the most of any film so far this year. Earlier this week, “Star Trek” surpassed the box office take of “Monsters vs. Aliens,” and is now $15 million ahead of the film. “Terminator: Salvation” suffered from its $51.9 million opening falling nearly 69 percent to $16.1 million, good for fourth place behind “Drag Me To Hell.” “Angels & Demons” finally crossed the $100 million mark with an $11.2 million weekend. “Terminator” …

Bryan Fuller: How Pushing Daisies ends—and how it was supposed to end

How Pushing Daisies ends—and how it was supposed to end

Prolific executive producer and television show creator Bryan Fuller admits he’s a little frustrated that he didn’t get to do everything he wanted to do with the final three episodes of this ABC series, Pushing Daisies, which premiere beginning this Saturday at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

“One of the things that people ask is how do you wrap up the Chuck and Ned story, and for me, there was one ending, and that ending was decades later, and I couldn’t really quite rush their story to any sort of conclusion,” Fuller told SCI FI Wire in an exclusive interview last week. “Even if I knew that the series was coming to an end when we were doing the last episode, I don’t know if I would have been able to end the Chuck and Ned story because, for me, that’s the relationship that goes on and that you fight for.” (Spoilers ahead!)
