‘Total Recall,’ ‘Neverending Story’ Set For Remakes

Having a “Neverending Story” might be gold in Hollywood. But since one doesn’t exist, it’s more like a neverending train of movie remakes. Two movies are coming back with a 21st century look that ruled the 1980s and 1990s — “Total Recall,” which originally starred Arnold Schwarzenegger, and “Neverending Story,” that featured the original Boxey from “Battlestar Galactica.” Luckily, Hollywood has forgotten about “Earth*Star Voyager,” or that might have been on the remake block as well. “Neverending Story” is in development at Warner Bros., according to The Hollywood Reporter through the people who did “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” and Leonardo DiCaprio. The original film was based on a German novel by Michael Ende, and like many books translated to the screen for younger …

Dangerous Days: Around The World

I’ve spent a lot of time ranting about negative things over the last few weeks, so I thought I’d change it up a bit and focus on the sunny side of life. The in the previous Dangerous Days column, I talked briefly about supporting genre filmmaking outside the mainstream Hollywood system, including independent and foreign features. Today, I’m going to do an overview of some of the amazing looking films coming out in those categories. First stop, Mexico. Believe it or not, my geekdar is telling me that Mexico is going to be the new hotbed of sci-fi filmmaking for the next few years. With directors like Guillermo Del Toro, Alfonso Cuarón and Alejandro González Iñárritu already representing Mexican film incredibly well in Hollywood, it’s no surprise that a new generation of Mexicans are being …

‘Heroes’ – Cold Wars

How refreshing! An episode that takes the time to focus on one story plot. Picking up where the last episode ended, we find Mohinder Suresh (Sendhil Ramamurthy), Peter Petrelli (Mino Ventimiglia) and Matt Parkman (Greg Grunberg) carting Noah Bennet (Jack Coleman) off to a local hotel for a special interrogation. The trio want to know who is behind this plan to round up all people with powers so they can put a stop to it. Therefore, Matt is going inside HRG’s drugged mind to pick up memories. The first memory is from five weeks ago. HRG meets with Angela Petrelli (Cristine Rose) at a part bench. HRG wants to continue the mission of The Company, but Angela says no. She gives him a severance package, a gold watch and some advice to spend time with his family. Memory #2: HRG is not adjusting to …

‘Battlestar Galactica’ – Deadlock

It’s no secret that “Battlestar Galactica” is a highly serialized drama, and with that, you have to have occasional setup episodes to get things moving. I recently defended “A Disquiet Follows My Soul” as such a setup episode where not a lot is happening, but it’s preparing the audience for a major event (which became the amazing “The Oath” and “Blood on the Scales”). And maybe “Deadlock” is one of those setup episodes. I mean, only four episodes remain, and two of them are the series finale, so one would think this is the time to set things in motion. I just didn’t feel it, sadly. Everyone is going about their business on the Galactica, except Ellen Tigh (Kate Vernon) and Boomer (Grace Park) join the Ragtag Fleet. With the Final Five reunited, and Caprica Six (Tricia Helfer) having …

New ‘Stargate: Universe’ Cast To La Bamba

The third series in the Stargate line is now pretty much ready to go as some of the final major cast members have come on board, including Lou Diamond Phillips. Phillips, who most recently had a slightly recurring role in “Numbers” on CBS, will play Col. Telford on “Stargate: Universe,” who like John Sheppard before him, suddenly has to become a military leader on board an Ancient-built ship they seem to be trapped in. Joining Phillips are Ming-Na, Elyse Levesque and Alaina Huffman. Ming-Na, who most recently Emily Hu in the film “Push

‘Heroes’ Hits Lowest Audience Numbers Yet

“Heroes” pulled in its smallest audience of the season Monday as fans don’t seem convinced that the “Fugitives” chapter is something they want to see. The NBC show earned a 4.4 rating/7 share, according to Fast National ratings from Nielsen Media Research. It finished behind everything except a “One Tree Hill” repeat on The CW, losing to “The Bachelor” on ABC, “24″ on Fox and reruns of CBS’ comedy block of “Two and a Half Men” and “The New Adventures of Old Christine.” The episode’s audience was off 4 percent from the previous week, which had already tied a previous low for the season. “Heroes” is off 12 percent from its 20-week average, and has lost nearly 28 percent of its audience since it had its lowest season premiere ever. More than 15 percent of “Heroes’” audience …

Tricia Helfer: No Weak Characters For Me

From a take-no-prisoners Cylon on “Battlestar Galactica” to a take-no-prisoners hander on “Burn Notice,” model-turned-actress Tricia Helfer says she worries about being typecast, but at the same time there are some roles she’s just not interested in. “I’d rather play an ass-kicking destroyer or a super strong spy or agent than some meek, vulnerable character,” Helfer recently told a group of reporters that included Airlock Alpha. “I don’t want to get typecast as one thing, and that’s certainly some of the other things I’ve been doing in hiatus, doing other roles.” But still, the ass-kicking aspect can’t escape her, especially in an upcoming role in the NBC series “Chuck.” “I don’t know how well my not being typecast is going, but they’re great shows,” she said. At the same …

Slocum: Notes On Airlock Alpha’s New Look, New Name

This entire site has changed! Can you believe it? The bosses already announced a bunch of changes, but there were a few they left out. I don’t think they want you to know. But me being the guy that I am, I decided to share them here. And remember, before you start sending nasty e-mails or wondering WTF, this is just satire.- We will now be called Airlock Alpha (as you already know) – From now on my column will be called, “Jake Slocum is always right, get used to it.” – Whenever you enter the site, you will be greeted with an audio clip of Michael Hinman screaming, “KHHHHHHHAAAAAANNNNNNNNN!!!!!!” – All opinions on the site are no longer opinion, they are fact. – Factpinions if you will – All news on “Dollhouse” will now be redirected to me, via the clause in my contract stating that I …
