‘Star Trek: The Experience’ Stays In Vegas

Confirming reports dating back to last September when it first closed, CBS/Paramount says it has signed a contract to return “Star Trek: The Experience” to Las Vegas, this time at the Neonopolis Center. “It is a bit premature to talk about it, but I can confirm that a contract has been signed,” Liz Kalodner, an executive vice president and general manager of CBS consumer products, told SciFi Wire. The attraction, which first opened in 1998 but was closed last year when Cedar Fair Entertainment Co. didn’t renew its contract with the Las Vegas Hilton, will reopen at the Neonopolis Center on May 8, the same time “Star Trek XI” is expected to premiere in theaters. The closing of the attraction caught a lot of Star Trek fan, as well as the franchise’s alumni, by surprise, even though rumors …

Jackson Returns As Marvel’s Nick Fury

Samuel L. Jackson is reprising his role as Nick Fury in nine upcoming Marvel Studios features. Following his brief debut as Fury at the end of “Iron Man,” Jackson will now flesh out the role in “Iron Man 2,” “The Avengers,” “Thor,” “The First Avenger: Captain America” and prospective sequels, according to Variety. Jackson recently indicated talks for his return had broken down, describing the setback as “an economic crisis in the Marvel Comics world.” Nevertheless, Jackson returns as other casting attempts experience similar hiccups, including the replacement of Terrance Howard as Rhodey by Don Cheadle, and Mickey Rourke’s negotiations for a respectable paycheck to star as villain Crimson Dynamo. Jackson’s role as Fury will showcase his position as a general with SHIELD, a law-enforcement …

For costume designer on the new Star Trek movie, JJ Abrams went to someone he hadn’t worked with before, Michael Kaplan. In a new interview in SciFi Now the veteran designer talks about what it was like in that first meeting with Abrams, how he put together the film’s costumes, and more. Excerpts below.

‘Life On Mars’ – The Simple Secret Of The Note In Us All

Seeing a good series like this slowly die on the vine is quite depressing. I really have enjoyed this show, and this episode was a typical of what we’ve seen this year from Life on Mars: a decent storyline, some humorous interaction among the cast members, and just enough supernatural elements to keep the show grounded in its science fiction premise. When a series is setting the ratings on fire, that could be seen as a good thing, but Life on Mars is hemorrhaging viewers on a weekly basis. A second season is extremely remote at best, and with the viewership decline in free fall, the plug could be pulled any day now. This was a solid episode with perhaps the best procedural mystery of the season so far. A newspaper columnist is murdered, and since he had written negatively about Hunt, there …

Lost – ‘The Life And Death Of Jeremy Bentham’

So, now we know how John Locke died, and who was responsible. Sadly, I can’t help but feel after this episode, “Is that all there is?” That’s not to say I was completely disappointed — in fact, I actually found it to be a pretty good, albeit somewhat confusing, episode. Parts of it seemed rushed, and I can’t help but wonder if this might have been more beneficial to see more of Locke’s exploits once he left the island.
But I digress. The show begins with a bit of a shock, which would have been much more shocking if the previews hadn’t given it away: Locke is alive. Apparently, it is good to be dead and brought to the island, but bad to die on the island itself. I hope I got that straight. We then flashback to see Locke teleported (I guess) to Tunisia, where he is rescued by Charles Widmore, …

Dushku Was Done With Hollywood, Then Came ‘Dollhouse’

There are a lot of good things happening to Eliza Dushku right now. She recently quit smoking. She stopped drinking, and she hasn’t had a cup of coffee in the last year. Another thing the actress almost gave up on, however, was Hollywood. But it took a little series created by Joss Whedon for Fox called “Dollhouse” to bring her back. “I wanted to be a political science professor and to go to school in Boston,” Dushku recently told USA Today. “I never wanted to be a big famous movie star and TV star. It kind of found me.” Following “Tru Calling,” Dushku had been to the point where she was ready to move back to New England and take on a new career away from the cameras. “I would have been fine and happy, and a little richer both financially and having had the experience I’ve had since …

Doc Cottle: I’m Happy With Anonymity

Have you ever watched an episode of “Battlestar Galactica” and thought, “Hey, I know that guy!” but can’t quite place his name when Doc Cottle appears steps in front of the camera? If so, you’re not alone. And actor Donnelly Rhodes is perfectly happy with that level of anonymity. “I consider myself a journeyman actor,” Rhodes told the Vancouver Sun. “I’ve never liked to categorize actors as movie stars, TV actors and stage actors. Actors don’t particularly like that, speaking as an actor myself.” The Canadian actor, who has a string of credits to his name ranging from family-oriented shows like “Danger Bay” to solid genre winners including “Smallville” and “Battlestar Galactica,” is due to collect a Sam Payne Award for Lifetime Achievement. Actress Babz Chula also is being …

‘Lost’ Slips A Little, ‘Mars’ Drowning

“American Idol” seemed to be the way many viewers are going Wednesday nights, and maybe that’s having a toll on “Lost.” Or then again, maybe it’s too science-fiction for the masses. Many genre shows are struggling to stay afloat right now, and while “Lost” is keeping a mostly stable audience, it’s still not pulling in the audiences it once did, even last year. “Lost” earned a 5.9 rating/9 share Wednesday according to Fast National ratings from Nielsen Media Research. That was down more than 9 percent from the previous week, and finished behind both Fox’s karaoke contest and “Criminal Minds” on CBS. “Lost” did finish ahead of “Life” on NBC, which managed just a 3.3/5, according to Zap2it. There was no new “Knight Rider” available for NBC, which went with a “Biggest Loser” …
