Should ‘Battlestar Galactica’ Thank ‘The Shield’?

“Battlestar Galactica” isn’t the only cable series behemoth looking to ends it run in the near future. The popular FX series “The Shield” did just that over the weekend, a show that proved basic cable could be the home for blockbuster television, especially in areas that were least expected like AMC (where Emmy-winning “Mad Men” airs). But how much of an influence has “The Shield” had on particular shows? Creator Shawn Ryan told TV Guide’s Mickey O’Connor that SciFi Channel’s signature series has a little “Shield” to be thankful for this holiday season. “We were making a show that was very, very fiscally responsible,” Ryan said. “And that’s the thing, in my opinion, that caused AMC, SciFi, TNT and TBS to really ramp up their production. Because, all of a sudden, if your costs …

And as the episode title suggests, “The Dreamscape,” mind tricks run rampant. Agent Olivia Dunham and the Bishops are tasked to investigate the death of the businessman, Mark (Ptolemy Slocum), which occurred at the Massive Dynamic building. He was a promising analyst with the tech giant. Walter notes unusual cuts on Mark unrelated to the fall. At the same time, …

It’s been one of the best kept secrets in science-fiction fandom: Who is the 12th and final Cylon, and when will it be revealed? Sources have told SyFy Portal in the past that the final Cylon’s identity was originally intended to be revealed in the mid-season finale of SciFi Channel’s “Battlestar Galactica” that aired earlier this year, but that storyline was pushed into the early episodes of the final batch of shows that premiere Jan. 16. Speculation has run rampant through both fandom, and even some of its celebrity followers like director Kevin Smith and author Peter David. British ‘Life On Mars’ Creator Loves American Version

It’s not often that an Americanized version of a British television import gets high marks from the people who created it in the first place, but Ashley Pharoah says he loves what ABC has done with his show “Life On Mars” since David E. Kelley left after the original pilot. “We’re really very proud of it,” Pharoah told The Hollywood Reporter while visiting the show’s New York set. “I think it’s marvelous.” Pharoah co-created the series for BBC, which starred John Simm, who would later go on to play The Master in “Doctor Who.” The original was a short-term series which ended with Simm’s Sam Tyler discovering his trip to the 1970s was a result of a coma. The American series, which stars Jason O’Mara, has already moved in a different direction, and that’s perfectly OK for Pharoah. …

CBS On Sales Block?

The company which holds the television rights to the Star Trek franchise could have a “for sale” shingle on it by 2009. Sumner Redstone, the controlling partner of both Viacom and CBS, already is looking to sell a 1,500-screen theater chain he owns, and may need to satisfy investors by possibly unloading either Viacom, the parent company of Paramount Pictures, or CBS. And Redstone has made it clear, he’s not interested in selling Viacom, according to The New York Times. If he were to sell CBS, it wouldn’t be something he’d do lightly, sources told the newspaper. Those involved with the theater sale cannot agree on how much the chain is actually worth, and if Redstone can’t reduce some of the $1.6 billion in bank debt he’s accumulated over the years, he may need to unload CBS after already …
